1-D Open Channel Flow Modelling
In this project students will run hydrodynamic numerical simulations on a river reach of the Alpine Rhine.
The adopted modeling approach is one-dimensional, riverbed is considered immobile and both steady and unsteady flow conditions are considered.
Simulations under steady flow conditions, enabling the calculation of backwater curves, are performed using the freeware software externe Seite HEC-RAS while the unsteady propagation of flood wave is performed using BASEMENT, a free software developed at Laboratory of Hydraulics and Hydrology (VAW) of ETH. The project is conducted in groups of maximum three students and the results will be discussed during the oral final presentation.
