Project on Plastic Recycling
The purpose of this project is to acquire knowledge on different plastic types and major applications, existing plastic waste treatment techniques, current plastic recycling practices in Switzerland, current challenges of plastic recycling (including impacts of chemical additives therein), and various technological, policy and economic instruments and tools for addressing these challenges. In addition, it aims to equip students with hands-on experience in life cycle assessment (LCA) and chemical risk assessment (CRA), particularly in the context of assessing the trade-offs of plastic recycling under given conditions. The project includes an on-site excursion of a plastic recycling plant in Switzerland, hands-on exercises of plastic sorting, and guest lecturers from industrial and/or regulatory experts and practitioners.
